Young Muslims United - A Review.
Sunday, May 4, 2008
Have you heard of CPR? It is not mouth-to-mouth resuscitation as commonly known. CPR is an acronym for the talk show of ‘Cakap Pasal Remaja‘. It is scheduled to be held on a monthly basis at different mosques with different themes and contents. It is customized to youth’s needs and interests by providing enlightening information regarding issues that are very close to their hearts.

It creates awareness of the Muslim youths’ behaviours via the highly interactive talk shows with specialists pertaining to our religion. It provides knowledge on Islamic contents, economy and news around the world. It has various entertaining programmes such as live performances, skit/video, games and many more.

The theme for the first series of Cakap Pasal Remaja is “Young Muslims United”. This was held at Masjid Hasanah on 4 April 2008 after Isya'. What do we mean by Young Muslims United? We realise that nowadays, the Muslim youths would rather spend their precious time with their friends at the bars or shopping malls than at the mosques or studying at home. We notice that they would prefer to do things that they find to be cool such as gang fights, having intimate relations, unruly behaviours such as shouting vulgarities and inappropriate attires.

The show began with a live performance by Ustaz Sofyan and his aspiring musicians. They played guitars, representing the youths’ coolest instruments, and sung a cover of M.Nasir's "Apocalyse".

The unique part of the whole programme is when the Youth Development Officers, or YDOs, from various mosques dressed trendily and communicated in the youth lingo in a mixture of Malay and English. This is to attract the youths’ attention so that they will not regard this as a form of lecture.

The specialists present discussed the current issues faced by the youths. They motivated them to frequent the mosque by changing their mindset of treating the mosque as a place for worship. It can be the youth hub where they can congregate and participate in fun activities that are being held.

“The reason why we focus on the youths is because they are our future leaders who would maintain law and order. These youths would be the ones changing the world,” commented Asatizah Nor Hayati. She also emphasized on identity, ambitions and motivation. She found that the youths nowadays choose to be ignorant of their surroundings, do not want to share their true identity and leave the public to figure out the answer for themselves. They do not have ambitions and behave like moving corpses with no inspirations. These youths, especially the Muslims, tend to give up easily. To them, all exams are difficult and if they fail, there is no point in trying again.

Next was a slide presentation on an interview with teenagers who suggested spending time in CCAs, reading books and beneficial activities out of school. The talk ended with another performance, this time by Darussalam Youth Gang. They sang a song ’Sebelum Cahaya’. “It was very touching and meaningful”, said the host, Ustaz Faisal of Masjid Hasanah.

So, what are you guys waiting for? Do attend the upcoming and subsequent ‘Cakap Pasal Remaja’!
